Continuing on the original observations from an old man, I have even more things to say. Education System Most are not paying for college through working a job, either because their parents are paying for it or they are taking out huge loans expecting a high salaried job to pay it back in no time. They don’t get the chance to ask themselves “why am I going to school?” if they are not paying for it. Another problem is that they are too focused on getting the piece of paper instead of becoming valuable or on learning valuable skills. They are in school 'just to get a degree', not to get a degree in something useful, but to just get a degree. Kids these days leave college expecting a handout from their employer. They feel entitled to a job for which they are not even qualified for. Education also provided a nice little timeline from childhood to young adulthood. Once they graduate, they feel hopeless and lost. “Just get the degree”. Ok, done. Now what? “Get a job”. Ok, sure. I finally found one but I hate it. “Get married” I’m unhappy with my marriage and my job. “Raise kids” Stop and think for yourself before you make decisions that can affect your future. In school there is only one correct answer and hundreds of incorrect ones. In life there is no single correct answer. If something doesn’t work, try again, even if you are wrong. They are so afraid of being punished that they end up not even trying. But this is how people learn, through failures and rejections, something the education system not only does not teach but punishes people for through bad grades and disciplinary actions. Herd Mentality Thanks to social media like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram everybody is aware of what everybody else is doing at all times. “My sister, cousins and closest friends are all doing XYZ so I better do the same!” Fear of missing out leads to irrational behavior. Before you do something, ask yourself why and what the end result is going to do be. Are you doing this because it is going to achieve one of your goals? Who are you trying to impress? Do you even like this person you want to subconsciously impress? Victim Mentality Do or do not, there is no try. And if you fail, do something else differently and repeat. You might say you have no control over your life, but have you even tried? Over-Glamorization of the Rich and Famous The millennial generation would rather fantasize than work for their dream. The media is making it look easy because they are trying to sell you a dream to consume more of their products. Most millennials worship the celebrity, the athlete and the musician that they see. They see this life of luxury on television and the internet and they want to live it. When they are not spending time daydreaming, they realize it is hard work to create rather than consume so they give up. Lack of Focus Too many distractions. This generation cannot and will not create anything without being told to do so by an authority figure. I've never seen my younger relatives write stories, draw or build anything that wasn't required by a school project. When they're bored, they spend their free time in front of a TV or computer screen. Quantity over Quality Thanks to the internet there is an abundance of information available to just about anybody and everybody. They know a lot about everything but their knowledge barely skims the surface. They can probably give you a lecture on how to build a foundation for a house. Or how to fix the pipes based on a video they saw on Youtube. Give them the tools and tell them to show you how it’s done and they wouldn’t be able to because they’ve never tried it themselves.
